Rolling Stone Looks at District 9
Rolling Stone magazine had a nice article in the newest issue (featuring Bob Dylan on the cover). They included it in the Summer movie preview. It includes interviews with both Blomkamp (director) and Jackson (producer). To read the article, click the image above.
I would say the most interesting quote is ”These aliens arrived 20 years ago in a dead, derelict mothership, which hovers above Johannesburg. It’s enormous, like the size of 10 football fields. The aliens have ended up in a Soweto-style township beneath the ship. It’s clear that they’re not really integrating into society. They like to scavenge things, rip up train tracks. So the authorities shift them 200 miles away, into the African belt. They’ve built a concentration camp.” Obviously, the concentration camp is known as ‘District 9′.
It also included a new image, as you can see below. I scanned it also, so here it is in a higher resolution.

New District 9 Image!

I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the trailer when I saw it Sunday night before “Wolverine.”
I studied Southern African politics and history in college while I was part of the anti-apartheid movement in the late-’80s and covered the Pan-African Film Festival in LA for years as a journalist, so I love the fact that a young South African director has made the film and shot it in that country.
Watching the trailer gave me chills — and conjured up memories of some of my favorite sci-fi works, “V,” “Alien Nation,” “Cloverfield,” and “Children of Men,” but this film looks very original.
I spent two hours on the D-9.com website after seeing “Wolverine.”
I can’t wait to see the next trailer.
